Homework
Our school policy on Homework was devised in conjunction with our parents and copies are available from the school office. Homework forms a link between home and school and develops a pattern of individual study, which will prove useful in later years.
In our school, homework can be given on up to four evenings per week
In P1-3 homework should take no longer than 15 minutes and in P4-7 should take no longer than 30 minutes.
Parents are asked to read to and with their children frequently, especially during the Infant Stages.
Parental Guidelines are available from the school office and class teachers as well as on our school app.
Please see our school app for further homework resources at Early, First and Second Levels.

Literacy—Reading.
· We teach sounds through Jolly Phonics, using songs and actions.
· Please encourage your child to sing the song and show you the action that goes with each sound. Please be aware that in phonics lessons, we teach the sound that the letter makes rather than its name for example, e would be read as ‘eh’ rather than ‘ee’
· Try using the sounds that your child has learned to build basic
Consonant, Vowel, Consonant words for example:
sat pat mat pin rag bat
The children can use their learning about sounds to begin to sound out words.
· You could encourage your child to ‘spot’ letters and words and try to read them when in shops or when reading stories at home.
· Reading regularly at home is very helpful for children as this helps them to learn new words and feeds their imagination, which helps with both reading and writing.
It is important that children know the names of letters and the order of the alphabet. You can support this by singing alphabet songs with your child and asking them to write or guess the letter before or after.
For example,
which letter comes before d ?
Literacy—Writing
It is very helpful for your child to be using pencils or colouring materials at home to develop their pencil control skills.
One of the strategies we use in class is to ask the child to draw a picture. The adult then writes a sentence to match the picture in a light coloured felt pen and the child writes over the words in pencil.
Maths
We have been learning about numbers from 1 to 10. Here are some ideas:
Songs and Rhymes
1,2,3,4,5 Once I Caught A Fish Alive
Ten Green Bottles
There Were 5 In the Bed
5 Big Sausages Sizzling in a Pan
5 Currant Buns
2 Little Dickie Birds
3 Blind Mice
5 Little Speckled Frogs
1,2 Buckle My Shoe
Days of the Week

Out and About
Encourage your child to spot and name numbers on buses, till receipts, clocks or signs. Ask them to count how many items are in your shopping basket or to pick up items for you e.g bring me 3 bananas please.
Sets
Ask your child to make sets or pairs of items. For example, give them 10 grapes and ask them to make sets of 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.
Shapes
Encourage your child to look out for 2D shapes. Such as triangles, rectangles, circles and squares.
